The Big Bang Science Fair

Just returned from a fab weekend in Birmingham where we attended the Big Bang Science Fair. We arrived on Thursday lunchtime, mooched around the Bullring Shopping Centre for a couple of hours before checking into the Travelodge. We had a picnic tea and were later joined by the Beans who were also staying at the same hotel 🙂 We enjoyed a good natter and finished off the evening watching the Masterchef final, we know how to party! 😉

Friday morning we were up and out early to head off to the Big Bang. We arrived just in time for our first seminar we had pre-booked ‘How to Save the World in 60 minutes’ which was fairly entertaining. The girls enjoyed it, Dr Ken talking to us about doing our bit to save the planet with a bid of comedy and magic thrown in. Not sure we learned anything new but it was ok. We then went off into the main hall which was very very busy!! We had a bit of a look round some of the stands and exhibits before going off to the next seminar ‘Who wants to be a Superhero’ finding out just what exactly scientists and engineers do. What did the girls learn? They don’t want to be engineers!

Poppy’s highlight was getting involved with Trauma Surgery 🙂 She loved it 🙂

We lunched with J, C, M and J from SOTP with their friend B and 3 of The Porticos which was good 🙂

We were due to go back on Saturday to watch Brainiac but we managed to sneak into the last showing on Friday. We were however, disappointed that it was exactly the same show as last year 😦

Friday evening back at the hotel, we, the Beans and 3 of the Porticos hit the streets of Birmingham in search of food. You would think an easy task but sadly not 😦 In the end some of us had take away pizza whilst others had Chinese. Mr LCR did some complaining about the looonnnnnggg wait and cold pizzas and managed to get over 50% off our bill!!

We hung out in the Porticos room eating pizza and Chinese, the children played cards whilst the adults chatted. Then it was off to bed for another early start on Saturday.

We had originally planned to return to the Big Bang on Saturday but seeing the huge traffic jams ahead, gridlocked to the NEC, decided to divert to IKEA 🙂 We text our apologies to our friends already at the Big Bang and had a rather lovely relaxing day 🙂

Artetc – Bodies

Today we looked at body proportions and practiced drawing hands, feet and hair, finally putting together a character using all the things learned from this and last weeks session. I found this one much more challenging than last weeks and so did the girls!

I am really enjoying our Artetc days and made especially lovely because I had lots of cuddles with Ben 🙂

Next week we are looking at colouring, shading and toning and creating a character in a scene 🙂

Artetc – Portraits

Merry and I have been planning our Artetc days, this worked really well for us in the past when we did our bits on Architecture so we decided to work that way again.

For the next few weeks we are working on Portraits and People.

Whilst Merry nipped out to register Ben, we got started.

Firstly we chatted about proportions of faces, where the eyes, nose and mouth sits on the face and drew out a basic oval shape, adding on a horizontal line across the middle for the eye line and a vertical line down the middle for the centreline. We added basic features in proportion to get an idea how to construct a face drawing.

We then went onto fold three sheets of A4 into six squares. On one we drew out six eye shapes, on another six mouths and finally six nose shapes.

I then asked them to create a full face using some of the examples of the features they had practised. They all did really well 🙂
