The Beans Summer Party

The theme for this year’s Beans Summer Party was Mythical creatures. We could not convince one member of our family to partake in fancy dress but the girls and I made an effort.

Both Skye and Poppy changed their outfits at the last minute, having had them carefully planned for weeks but they both looked fab 🙂 Skye was a woodland pixie and Poppy was a vampire fairy and I went as a Siren complete with blue wig! 🙂

Other mythical party goers included a leprechaun, an alien, a unicorn, a fire nymph, phoenix, vampire, the abominable snowman, a flying pig, Medusa and a troll 🙂

It was a roasting hot day and the adults spent a lovely day chatting in the shade whilst the kids raced about, dipping in and out of the paddling pool to cool off.

A lovely day of yummy food, great company, happy kids and sunshine, what more could you ask for? 🙂 Thank you Beans for hosting another fab party 🙂

The following day the Barts called in on their way back up North and we have had a lovely afternoon discussing ours and their travel plans 🙂

Chickpea Curry

I adapted a chickpea curry recipe I found and it was so yummy I needed to make sure I made a note of it for future use. So here it is for me and anyone else to use 🙂

All measurements are approximate.

2 tbsp sunflower oil
knob of butter
1 onion, diced
2 cloves of garlic, diced finely
1-2 tsp ground ginger

Saute all of the above for approx 5 mins. Then add;

2 x tins Chickpeas
1 x tin chopped tomatoes
Fill tin with water and add that too
1tsp cumin
1tsp coriander
1tsp turmeric
1tsp salt
1/2tsp garam masala
1tsp cayenne pepper

Cover and cook on the hob, low-medium heat for approx 30 mins.

We had ours with left over dahl and rice 🙂

The Green Backyard

I noticed an open day being held at The Green Backyard in Peterborough. I have driven past it many times, heard lots of positive comments about it from an ex-colleague and thought it was about time I killed my curiosity and went to have a look.

I took Poppy and her friend E, along with a block of cheese and a French stick (as per advert request) along to the GBY. We arrived a little earlier than advertised but went in any way. We were introduced to Sophie and her Dad, Renny, who opened the community growing space back in 2009. We were made to feel very welcome, there is a real community spirit about the place. Whilst we were there a group of adults with special needs were laying bark chippings to stop the ground from being so boggy, there were others just calling in for a chat, bringing homemade biscuits and cakes to share. 🙂

The girls fed the free range chickens and had a wander around the allotments and pond area and played on the tyre swings whist we waited for others to arrive.

Later in the day we prepared and ate delicious cheese fondue.

Renny demonstrated clay modelling and willow weaving – Poppy and E were absolutely in their element and could probably have stayed for hours longer!

It’s had to believe that Peterborough City Council want to destroy all this hard work and build more houses on the site!! This green space has been a lifeline for many people, helping them recuperate after illness, getting back into work and to learn and share skills. The GBY organise monthly craft fairs, drumming circles and have many free family events, promoting new talent, getting kids outside, learning about nature and the environment from people who are passionate about the project.

Please help to SAVE THE GREEN BACKYARD by taking a minute of your time to sign this petition.

It is an amazing space which we are looking forward to revisiting in the very near future. 🙂

Summer might or might not be here…

When I started this blog post a couple of weeks ago *blush*, Summer was here!!

We have taken Skipper on some lovely long walks, Skye and Pops have been taking their cameras out and had fun taking nature shots and photos of each other doing crazy things 🙂

Skye is now very much into her photography, especially wildlife and nature, and is starting to think about setting up her own photography blog and has some really great ideas. She has been busy researching other photography blogs and looking at which camera she is going to put on her wish list 🙂 At the moment she is using my Fuji S3200 but she really needs a DSLR, especially if she wants to shoot wildlife.

Both girls had a lovely day out recently at a Mums and Babies sling photo shoot. Skye helped the photographer, selecting and changing lenses, carrying equipment, and setting up shots. She loved it! Poppy was helping entertain the littlies and was very happy to get the opportunity to sling a very little 3 year old! 🙂

Skye has had a busy social life, meeting up with friends, having sleepovers and is just, well I guess, growing up!

Poppy is quite happy to potter around at home with me and we had a really lovely day today sitting in the garden painting and then when we got too hot, came in to do some baking 🙂

We waved Skye off to Scout camp for a week and unfortunately since she has been gone, the Summer seems to have hidden itself away and it has rained most days 😦

Poppy has spent a long weekend with her Nana and Papa on the Norfolk coast and has had a brilliant time. She has visited a working mill and baked bread, been to the beach and her and Papa hired a tandem and went off on a 6 mile bike ride 🙂 She made a friend too and has just had a brilliant time. Apparently she did miss us a little bit though 🙂

Poppy got home on the Monday night and her friend E arrived on Tuesday to stay with us until Friday 🙂 So far they have made some fimo key rings, rings and necklaces, made dinner, crocheted, stayed up late chatting, been out walking, visited Peterborough Cathedral where we went hunting for and found the memorial stone of one of our ancestors laid into the floor of the cathedral 🙂 We spent the day a the Green Back Yard. clay modelling and willow weaving and they collected boxes whilst I was food shopping to make bits of an Olympic stadium!

Today looks like a good sunny day (at least until lunchtime) so we are off for a walk 🙂
