Making Friends with Trees – The Beech

We had booked today to go on a local home ed event “Making Friends with Trees”. We met up in a village hall car park just outside the grounds of Wimpole Hall then took a short walk to a beautiful spot beneath an oak and beech tree.

Melanie and Tamsin did a great job of organising lots of outdoor activities followed by a walk back to the hall for some indoor craft and baking activities.

The tree being observed today was the beech. I mostly photographed and caught bits of information but it all seemed very informative 🙂 They spent a bit of time ‘getting to know the tree’ by touching it looking high into the canopy above using a mirror, listening to it with a fetoscope, surprisingly trees seem to ‘swoosh’ inside, Poppy said it sounded like it was drinking milkshake!??! They took a bark rubbing and did a quick sketch of the tree. Working in pairs, they were also shown how to measure the height of the tree – which incidentally approximately 24 meters high. They also measured the girth of the tree to work out the age, our tree was 79.5 years old!

There was also bug identification but neither Poppy or Skye had time to do that.

Back at the hall there were craft table set up for making wax leaves, drawstring pouches, tree elf making, a table full of interesting facts, drawings, photos, recipes and quotes for them to put into their scrapbooks. In the kitchen they were baking leaf shaped biscuits.
